We’re hurtling towards UFC® 176 fight night and you may think you know everything about this card, but there are five things you need to know:
- Someone’s out for revenge
- Correia takes on the 2nd Horsewoman
- The bully is back
- It’s in Los Angeles
- YOU can be there
Revenge for Mendes
For featherweight champion Jose Aldo, this is a rematch against the top contender in his weight division.
For Chad Mendes, it’s revenge plain and simple.
Over two years ago, these two headlined UFC® 142 in Brazil and Aldo walked away with a first round KO over Mendes.
Two years later, an undefeated Mendes is back for his vengeance. Training with Team Alpha Male, Mendes is riding high off of his 5-0 record (16-1 overall) since his last meeting with Aldo and is hoping to achieve the same success as his teammate and bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw.
The champ, Aldo, is no slouch, and has continued his undefeated streak to extend to an impressive 24-1 record. UFC fans will be in for a treat when this main event unfolds with an opportunity for the champ to prove once again why he’s one of the top pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world, OR for a new champ to be crowned and Mendes to exact his revenge!
Bethe Correia takes on Shayna Baszler
Anyone who was watching at UFC® 172 got the message loud and clear. After dominating Jessamyn Duke, Correia’s hand was raised as she took the UD victory. If her performance didn’t say enough, Correia used a simple hand gesture to send a message to the other women in her division.
After the match was over, Correia lifted four fingers, putting one down to symbolize the loss to one of the four Horsewomen.
(Backstory: Marina Shafir, Ronda Rousey, Shayna Baszler and Jessamyn Duke form the four Horsewomen, a group of MMA fighters that train and live together in SoCal. )
It would appear that Correia is looking to unseat each and every one on her quest to the championship, ultimately ending with a matchup against Rousey. That said, the only thing on her mind right now is Baszler.
Gray Maynard Gets a Welcome Party from Fabricio Camoes
So The Bully was never really gone, he was just laying low after his string of defeats. Come UFC® 176 he’ll be back and greeted by Fabricio Camoes.
Maynard is known for having one of the fastest KOs ever but has dropped his last three out of four matches. Camoes has an overall record of 1-3-1 in the UFC, so for both men this is an opportunity to make a come back.
Who do you think will get the victory and how will they do it?
THE UFC last touched down in LA August 4, 2012, but UFC was back in California on December 14, 2013 in Sacramento for Johnson vs Benavidez 2. Still, a California fight night was overdue for west coast fans!
Many fighters hail from and train in California, including main event challenger Mendes. Cali is a huge hub for MMA fighters and UFC fans alike. For UFC fans coming from out of town, Los Angeles is the perfect backdrop for this event. With loads to do, see, eat and enjoy, this is the perfect spot for some UFC action.
