Though the Ultimate Fighting Championship® schedules fights year-round and doesn’t technically have seasons, it does distinguish between seasonal campaigns that break up the year and group fights together. September 4th marks the date when UFC President Dana White will officially announce the new season, “GO BIG,” and itemize the fights ahead. What’s the significance of “GO BIG”? It’s actually a fragment of the idiom ‘Go big or go home,’ a popular phrase in the sports world that loosely translates to ‘Give it all you’ve got or don’t bother trying.’ You can bet that fighters will be bringing it during this campaign as they seek to earn or defend titles and settle old grudges!
A launch party for “GO BIG” will be held September 4th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Vegas and will be attended by over twenty fighters! The event is free and will also stream live on UFC.com as well as on UFC’s YouTube channel. UFC champions Daniel Cormier and Conor McGregor will be there in full force, as will contenders Alex Gustafsson and Luke Rockhold. The “GO BIG” campaign will kick off with UFC Fight Night 75 on September 27th in Japan and has scheduled several fights in the United States – notably, the upcoming UFC 192 and 194 events.
This is the first fight of the new seasonal campaign that will be held stateside! Booked at the Toyota Center in Houston, this event promises a brilliant line-up. The fight card includes Daniel ‘DC’ Cormier defending his light heavyweight title for the first time against number two contender Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson as the main event, while Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley will battle it out with Johny ‘Bigg Rigg’ Hendricks in an exciting welterweight bout as the co-main.
Gustafsson comes off of a loss to Anthony Johnson entering this title fight, and we can only guess at the mental repercussions that may have on him. He will need to be in rare form in order to challenge Cormier for the belt. Woodley vs. Hendricks is actually a re-match, but its origins stem from the fighters’ pre-UFC days. Back in their college days, these two met at the Big 12 wrestling finals, where Woodley alleges that Hendricks cheated to win. Woodley aims to set the record straight at UFC 192! If that’s not enough action for you, this night also marks Rashad ‘Suga’ Evans’ first UFC bout since November of 2013 – against Ryan ‘Darth’ Bader, who wants to prove beyond all doubt that he deserves the next title shot.
This one is big. Scratch that – bigger than big. The UFC Santa brings fans the featherweight championship title unification bout between Jose ‘Junior’ Aldo and Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor as an early Christmas present, which will be a do-over from UFC 189 in July. Aldo hopes to keep the fight short and sweet so that ‘no one suffers,’ but still plans to come out victorious.
The co-main event for 194 will feature Chris ‘The All-American’ Weidman vs. Luke Rockhold putting up their dukes for the middleweight title. Weidman is the reigning middleweight champion with a lot of confidence, while Rockhold comes off of a four-fight win streak in which he finished off all his opponents within the first or second rounds.
Another notable fight we’re looking forward to on this card? The bigtime strawweight bout between eleventh-ranked Michelle ‘The Karate Hottie’ Waterson and undefeated fifth-ranked Tecia ‘The Tiny Tornado’ Torres. If Waterson brings her A-game, a win over Torres could give her a serious boost in the rankings!
Okay, we know that this night doesn’t fall within the new seasonal campaign, BUT the weigh-in will take place September 4th at 4 p.m. PT at the MGM Grand Garden in Vegas – that’s immediately after the “GO BIG” launch party at 1 p.m. PT! The headlining fight for 191 features Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson and John ‘The Magician’ Dodson re-hashing an old grudge from their last meeting in 2013, which you can watch for free on UFC’s YouTube channel. Don’t miss round two of this legendary flyweight bout – get your ticket package for UFC 191 and make plans to attend the September 4th launch party too!
