Anyone who tuned into UFC® 173 was salivating when the UFC announced the rematch at UFC® 177. TJ Dillashaw challenged the unstoppable and dominant bantamweight champion, Renan Barao, and WON.
Not only did he do it, he controlled the entire fight and provided one of the greatest upsets of the year. So that brings us to today, we’re just a few days away from the rematch.
What can we expect? Will Barao exact his revenge? Will Danny Castillo and Dillashaw bring home wins for Team Alpha Male? Will Bethe Correia unseat another of the four horsewomen? These, and more, are burning questions in the minds of UFC fans. Read on for a preview of the main event, two for main event fights and our prediction of how all the fights will go down in Sacramento this weekend!
T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao
If you called Dillashaw as the champ after UFC® 173 you must’ve had some insider insight OR been watching him train everyday. Now he has to return to the Octagon™ and do it again.
Both fighters have been on their grind, however, cagerank.com data indicates that Barao will come out on top (via round 2 submission), while the odds are in Dillashaw’s favor listing him as the favorite along betting lines…
Honestly, it means no one will be surprised by anything either of these men do. The world knows Dillashaw can hold his own, and Barao had been a champion for years. It will come down to who can stand their ground longer. In the end, this match goes the distance and the champ retains the bantamweight title in his hometown.
Prediction: Dillashaw via (Majority) Decision
Danny Castillo vs. Tony Ferguson
In the co-main event another hometown favorite will face off against a Cali-kid. Castillo and Ferguson are both California natives and are sure to put on a show for their home state audience.
Castillo trains with Dillashaw as part of Team Alpha Male, and wins for both men would certainly do the gym proud.
One of the more even matchups on this card, cagerank.com predicts a 52% chance that Castillo will win, while the betting odds are in Ferguson’s favor.
Castillo’s advantages lie in his takedown offense, strong jaw, submission, takedown defense, and heart in general. For Ferguson, youth, reach, a strong jaw and heavy hands will be on his side.
While I think it’s either man’s fight, I truly believe Ferguson will come out guns blazing and secure the win.
Prediction: Ferguson via round 2 submission
Shayna Baszler vs. Bethe Correia
The UFC’s women’s bantamweight division will take center stage as top ranked Correia looks to unseat yet another of the four horsewomen.
For Baszler, this marks a return to competition in over a year and a half. Will her training with champ Ronda Rousey and others secure her the win?
Correia is undefeated and proved in her last bout, by dominating Jessamyn Duke, that she has the skills. While I expect both women to come out with fire, I truly believe that Baszler’s absence from competition as well as Correia’s streak and new confidence will play a huge part in Saturday’s matchup.
Prediction: Correia via round 1 KO/TKO
Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Ramsey Nijem
Prediction: Nijem via decision
Damon Jackson vs. Yancy Medeiros
Prediction: Jackson via KO/TKO in round 2
