What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? We’ll all find out together at UFC® 183! The MGM Grand Garden Arena will play host to the highly anticipated Anderson Silva vs Nick Diaz main event on Jan. 31, 2015.
MMA fans will converge in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, to witness Silva vs Diaz. While we’re still some time away from UFC® 183, you can believe that everyone has an opinion on who will win this fight.
To help even our most informed fans make a better decision, we’ve decided to bring you a fighter vs fighter breakdown and our prediction for who will win in this return to the Octagon™ matchup.
There’s not much to say about "The Spider" that hasn’t already been said; he’s one of the GOATS of MMA fighting. Widely known and respected in the sport, his record breaking career and incredible skill as a technical fighter has made him one of the most feared men inside the Octagon™.
After over a year out of action, a traumatizing injury and suffering two losses in a row for the first time in his career, how will Silva bounce back? Many called for his retirement, including friend and light heavyweight champ, Jon Jones, and UFC® broadcaster, Joe Rogan.
Many expect Silva to come away with a victory against Diaz, but for these supporters comparing a pre-injury Silva to a post-injury Silva, may be another story entirely. Silva has stated his leg is at “91 percent” and has lost some of his killer instincts:
"I’m a little apprehensive in training. I know I can execute the movement, but I end up not doing it for fear." - Silva
It’s clear to anyone who follows MMA that the almost 40 year old, if he makes a return to his previous form, would win this fight, but no one has seen him in the Octagon™ and we will all watch together to see how he bounces back during his return.
The very loquacious Diaz has made another move and surprised the MMA community by returning to the Octagon™ in a different weight class against Anderson Silva.
Diaz will be debuting as a middleweight come January against one of the greatest middleweights of all time. He lost his last two fights, both of which were title opportunities, with his last professional loss coming at the hands of, the now retired, Georges St- Pierre.
GSP, interestingly enough, predicted that Diaz could win against Silva if he’s able to survive the early rounds. Diaz’s striking, particularly his punches and jabs, are some of the best in MMA and even for a seasoned fighter like Silva, it can cause problems.
That said, Diaz moved all the way up to 185 pounds, instead of asking for a catchweight and no one has seen how the new weight will affect him. Like Silva, the world will need to wait and see how Diaz performs come UFC® 183.
What The Odds Say
According to the current odds, Silva is a 2-1 favorite over Diaz.
Additionally, cagerank.com data suggests that Silva has a 64% chance of winning with a victory coming most likely via KO or decision. If Diaz hopes to win it will likely come via KO in the later rounds of the matchup.
Our Prediction: Diaz via decision.
