Two current champions, one former champion and some of the UFC’s best will come together on March 15 for UFC® 185. Although there are some tough calls, here is how I think it is all going to go down:
Anthony “Showtime” Pettis vs Rafael dos Anjos
What’s On the Line: Lightweight Title
Anthony “Showtime” Pettis will have his title challenged for the second time against Rafael dos Anjos at UFC® 185. Ranked number five overall in pound-for-pound fighters, Pettis reasserted himself as a champion when he submitted Gilbert Melendez this past December at UFC® 181.
Any way someone can kick, Pettis can do it… and do it better. From spins to back-kicks, the Muay Thai fighter is as light on his feet as he is aggressive in his striking.
Dos Anjos is a master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with solid takedowns and the ability to defend against them. Unfortunately, the black belt does not appear to have the same power on his feet.
When it comes down to it, the only way for dos Anjos to show up “Showtime” is for him to take Pettis down to the mat… and we don’t envy that job.
Prediction: Pettis via Head-kick TKO
Carla Esparza vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk
What’s On the Line: Strawweight Title
This strawweight bout is more of a toss-up. Esparza is a respected finisher with many of her wins coming from gruesome submissions and legitimate knockouts. Just recently having won her title, she is still a hungry champion, eager to hold on to her championship belt.
The Polish Jedrzejczyk, however, is fierce and currently undefeated. Our guess is Esparza is going to have to work hard to defeat the enduring, Muay Thai fighter. Since Esparza is still very green in her champion role, we would not be surprised if Jedrzejczyk got the best of her.
Prediction: Jedrzejczyk via Submission
Johny Hendricks vs Matt Brown
What’s On the Line: Hendricks’ Comeback or Brown’s Chance at a Title Fight
These are two well-matched fighters. Both heavy-handed welterweights, the two’s only recent blemish came at the hands of the current champion, Robbie Lawler.
Hendricks has a lot to prove. After a poor performance against Lawler, which lost him his welterweight title, the old-school striker needs to step up his game. “Big Rig” needs to remind his fans of his talent and lethal punches.
Brown’s endurance could win him the fight. He has the same amount of power as Hendricks and a similar strategy, but we have seen him show more energy in the Octagon™ recently. Unfortunately, energy is what Hendricks seemed to lack most in his last fight.
Prediction: Brown via Decision
UFC® 185 will take place at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. You will not want to miss this collision of talent and strength. Who do you think will come out on top?
