UFC 185 Recap: Two New Champions Crowned!

Posted by Rory Harris on Mar 15, 2015 8:23:00 AM

UFC® 185 was full of surprises, to say the least! With two new champions crowned, fans were left amazed and fighters were left mystified. With so many incredible cards in the line-up, it was no surprise, however, that the night was filled with enough takedowns, KOs and sparring to keep fans on the edge of the seats!

Here is a breakdown of how the shocking night played out:

Roy Nelson vs. Allistair Overeem

Allistair Overeem’s kicks may have been what helped him win out over Roy Nelson. Nelson did not go quietly, however, making several visible marks on “The Reem” and lasting through some pretty intense shots where most fighters would have buckled under.

Result: Overeem, by Unanimous Decision

Johny Hendricks HeadshotJohny Hendricks vs Matt Brown

In the end, wrestling won out in this solid match-up between the former welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks, and Matt Brown. “Bigg Rigg’ showed up to the fight in much better shape than when he fought current champion, Robbie Lawler. He continuously brought Brown to the mat and his wrestling helped him win. By doing so, he also reaffirmed himself as one of the best grapplers in the UFC®.

Result: Hendricks, via Unanimous Decision

Carla Esparza vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk

The strawweight women’s battle came as a surprise, and not just because champion Esparza chose to show up in a singlet.

new champIn the first round, Esparza was intent on taking down Jedrzejcyzk so she could begin doing her work. The Polish striker, though, was not taking the bait - the two stayed on their feet. After Jedrzejczyk landed a few shots in the final seconds of the first round, the energy begins to shift as the crowd recognized Esparza was losing steam.

The second round is where Jedrzejcyzk really shined, however. She stepped in immediately taking big, powerful shots to Esparza, as she repeatedly failed to get taken down by the current champ. The two sparred, but the women’s strawweight champion ended up on her face. In the end of the second round, Jedrzejczyk performed a combination on Esparza, and she buckled underneath the hits.

Result: Jedrzejcyzk via TKO

Anthony Pettis vs Rafael dos AnjosAnthony Pettis vs Rafael dos Anjos

Dos Anjos came into the Octagon all business. “Showtime”, having recently come off a win against Gilbert Melendez in December, looked confident and focused as always. The creative Mua-Thai fighter has made a huge name for himself over the past few years.

It was dos Anjos, however, who became the star of this fight. With incredible takedowns and beatings leaving Pettis bloodied, the Brazilian showed a side of himself UFC® fans had yet to see. This year has already proven to be a thrilling one for the UFC® . With Pettis having always been a finisher, fans were also surprised when the fight went to the fifth round. In the end, it was dos Anjos who was able to win over “Showtime”.

Result: Dos Anjos, via Unanimous Decision
