So where is UFC® 188?
For only the second time in UFC® history, the organization will take a trip to Mexico City Arena in Mexico City, Mexico.
Mexico City Arena hosted UFC® 180 last November when the event was supposed to be headlined by a UFC® Heavyweight Championship bout between Velasquez and Werdum. However, Velasquez was forced to pull out due to a knee injury.
About Mexico City ArenaMexico City Arena (Arena Ciudad de México) was built in February 2012 in the Azcapotzalco borough, north of Mexico City. It is an indoor area with a seating capacity of 22,000, which is sure to be packed for the bout!
The arena also contains 124 luxury suites, over 1000 screens, two helipads, more than 300 security cameras and over five thousand parking spaces. With a spectacular lobby plus a covered/heated space, this arena is quite the crowd pleaser.
Due to its comfort, modern appeal, and safety, Mexico City Arena is host to not only UFC® 188, but also other events including concerts, sports, and theater.
What to Do in Mexico City
Although UFC® 188 is the highlight of Mexico City, you should take a few days to explore the city! From museums to parks to historical sites, Mexico City has plenty of activities to keep you relaxed and entertained.
Chapultepec Park is Mexico City’s largest and most popular park. It contains several museums and lakes, the current presidential residence, and a zoo! If you enjoy Mexican history and artifacts, the National Museum of Anthropology—located within the Chapultepec forest—is a must see. The Chapultepec Castle is also one spot you can’t miss; take a walk and embrace the unforgettable history and beautiful views.
Palacio de Bellas Artes is another place at the top of the list. Catch an opera or ballet performance, or just take in the breathtaking architecture!
Last but certainly not least, take a trip to Coyoacán! Here you can stroll the quaint streets, grab a bite to eat, visit the craft market and watch street performers.
Travel TipsIf you are coming from outside the country of Mexico, make sure you have your passport!
For air travel, you will want to fly into Mexico City’s airport: Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México. Within Mexico City, traveling by bus is cheap and convenient, particularly if you ride the Metrobus.
You can also travel by taxi, metro or car. If you travel by taxi, make sure you choose the sitio (stationed) taxis. Never hail a cab on the street. Also, be aware that traffic in Mexico City is extremely heavy, so renting a car would be rather impractical.
As far as weather, Mexico City has a mild climate throughout the year. In the month of June, you can expect fairly warm temperatures but also potential downpours since it is rainy season. The nights can get a tad chilly, so bring a light jacket!
