"The king is back"
Those notorious words spoken by Conor McGregor at the conclusion of his second fight with Nate Diaz in 2016 have rested in the fighting world's conscious for over two years. Not because of the validity of the statement, but rather because of the now-recognized obscurity of it.
McGregor's declaration of his return to prominence was followed by one more fight in the UFC before an almost two-year absence from The Octagon®. Now, it's important to note the magnitude of that one last fight in the UFC; McGregor became the first fighter in the promotion's history to hold two championship belts at the same time when he knocked out Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November of 2016. That night McGregor coined himself the king of New York, fitting for the UFC's first ever event at the legendary Madison Square Garden, but then up and vanished.
