UFC 178: Welcome to the Main Card

Alvarez gets UFC welcome from Cowboy Cerrone
The featherweight fight you’ve been waiting for
Zingano looking for Rousey
Cruz’in back to the UFC

The fact that the main event isn’t one of those headlines speaks volumes about the depth of this main card. ALSO, the fact that the Dominick Cruz matchup I’m alluding to is part of the prelims on Fox Sports shows that the UFC® means business when it comes to providing the best fights possible for their fans.

That said, with all these headlines, which fight are you most looking forward to? Read on to see what ramifications each fight has and how YOU can be in Las Vegas come September to see the action happen LIVE!

Cerrone - Alvarez

As far as co-main events, or just fights in general, go this one is the cat’s meow.

For those of you living under a rock who are unfamiliar with Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, he is one of the UFC’s most charismatic and dynamic lightweight fighters. His ability to finish in a variety of ways, his 14 post-fight bonuses, and his fan-friendly personalities makes him one of the MMA’s most entertaining and liked fighters.

Eddie Alvarez is no slouch either, after a three fight win streak within the Bellator organization, as well as being their Light Weight Champion, he brings much to the UFC. Having these talented fighters segway into the main event will leave UFC fans salivating for more.

Poirier – McGregor

It’s hard to tell which is the more exciting fight between the Cowboy/Alvarez bout at the meeting of these feisty featherweights.

Dustin Poirier has had an EPIC two years within the organization with a decision victory over Erik Koch and two KO/TKO decisions since then. Poirier’s repertoire of KOs and submissions makes him a pleasure to watch and with his unapologetic pre-fight engagements with opponents it makes for an entertaining affair all around.

As for the UFC’s young Irishman Conor McGregor his past two years has been extremely similar to Poirier’s with a slew of wins under his name and certain panache for smack talking. The two have already clashed with each bragging about their strengths and confidently proclaiming themselves the stronger fighter, but only September at UFC® 178 will tell.

Zingano-NunesZingano – Nunes

Okay, honestly MMA fans have known for a while how talented the women’s division is, but with the name Ronda Rousey being one of the only ones getting airtime (and for good reason) now that the champ is on a short hiatus, it’s time for the division’s other talent to shine.

At UFC® 178, #1 ranked Cat Zingano will take on #8 ranked Amanda Nunes. Both of these fighters are powerful aggressors and when these two unstoppable forces clash in the Octagon™, there’s no telling what will happen. Zingano’s #1 rank and undefeated streak has her as a favorite, but MMA fans and the champ, Rousey, would be fooling themselves if they believed this wasn’t a must-watch fight.

Cruz – Mizugaki

After being out of action for nearly three years, former champ Dominick Cruz looks to make his return to the Octagon™ against #6 ranked bantamweight Takeya Mizugaki as the highlight of the UFC® 178 prelims.

Following a series of unfortunate events, first a torn ACL then a groin injury led to Renan Barao being named the interim champion and the rest is history. After two and a half years out of competitive fighting he will finally return against one of the hottest competitors in his weight class.

Mizugaki finds himself on an incredible win streak, winning his way to the #6 rank in a very competitive bantamweight division. For UFC® fans, this highly anticipated matchup will be one of the ages!

ALL of this to look forward to, and I haven’t even mentioned the main event title fight between champ Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso. WHEW!
