UFC 185: A 12-Fight Feature

Posted by Rory Harris on Feb 10, 2015 10:13:04 AM

Anthony Pettis is set to defend his title for the second time against top lightweight contender, Rafael dos Anjos at UFC® 185. The current lightweight champion recently returned to the UFC® after taking time off for an injury to face and, ultimately defeat, Gilbert Melendez.

The card, featuring 12 fights total, is stocked full of fighters working to climb their way to the top and others trying to recover from their last loss.

Case in point, Johnny Hendricks will face-off against Matt Brown in his first fight since losing his welterweight title to Robbie Lawler in December of last year. The card will also include big fight cards with big time fighters, like Alistair Overeem and Roy Nelson.

The event will take place at the American Airlines center in Dallas, Texas on March 14.

Fight FeaturePettis vs dos Anjos

“Showtime” Pettis proved his worth in his first title defense against Melendez this past December. The fighter’s acrobatic style and energetic striking has made him a star.

He will have another chance to show his chops and defend his title against dos Anjos.

The fight will mark dos Anjos’ fifth fight. He may be best known for knocking out former lightweight champion, Benson Henderson, at UFC® Fight Night 49 last August.

Esparza vs Jedrzejczyk

One of the most interesting elements of UFC® 185 will be the first female strawweight co-main event in UFC® history. Carla Esparza will take on her first title defense against the Polish fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Esparza won her title of the first ever UFC® female strawweight champion on Season 20 of The Ultimate Fighter.

The former Invicta FC strawweight champion most recently fought against Rose Namajunas and won the fight by submission with an impressive rear-naked choke in the third round. This submission won her the Performance of the Night.

Hendricks vs Brown

JohnyHendricks_Headshot-1Past welterweight champion, Johnny “Big Rig” Hendricks, will face Matt “the Immortal” Brown for the first time in the Octagon™.

Brown has been on a significant winning streak as of late, winning most his matches by knockouts. His only loss was by the current welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler, by decision. The UFC® had been searching for an opponent for the up-and-coming Brown, and after Hendricks lost his welterweight title to  Robbie Lawler earlier this year, they finally found one.

Both heavy hitters, Hendricks and Brown are a well-matched pair. The match between the two dominant sluggers will definitely be one to watch!

Overeem vs Nelson

The heavyweights are ranked number 11 and nine respectively. Although the former Strikeforce Champion, Overeem, has had ups and downs since signing with the UFC®, he recently was able to knockout Stefan Struve in the first round via a series of hard hits.

Nelson, on the other hand, is coming off a rough knockout loss by Mark Hunt at last year’s UFC® Fight Night in Japan. While one tries to create a winning streak and the other attempts to redeem himself, the two’s fight will most likely be an explosive one.
