The biggest featherweight match-up of all time is now official. Seven-time champion, Jose Aldo, will face Conor McGregor on July 11, 2015, at UFC® 189 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
McGregor, known as "The Notorious," has taken the UFC® by storm since signing with the promotion in Feb. 2013. The eccentric fighter will face Aldo, the only featherweight champion the UFC® has ever had, at the end of the UFC® International Fight Week. UFC® 189 will act as the finale for the week-long event in Vegas also featuring the Ultimate Fighter Finale.
McGregor will finally get the title shot he has been waiting for since taking the MMA world by storm. The unique fighter has made no bones about his desire to take on “Scarface,” the reigning champion of the featherweight division.
“The Notorious” has not lost since signing with the UFC® and frequently takes out opponents via knockout punches. McGregor took down Dennis Siver in a highly-anticipated bout in Boston at UFC® Fight Night Jan. 18. After his win, the Irishman famously confronted Aldo, who was seated in the stands.
Just Another Contender?
Despite their young ages, both fighters have impressive resumes. Pound-for-pound, Aldo is ranked second among all UFC® fighters.
With everyone Jose “Scarface” Aldo has taken on, it is not surprising his attitude towards the outspoken fighter is good-natured. He appears more amused by McGregor’s antics than enraged.
McGregor, on the other hand, is a whole different story. It is hard to figure out if the fighter is putting on a show or if his cockiness and humor is so others understand he is as good as he claims to be.
With his five-fight winning streak, almost all by knockout, it is also not surprising the up-and-coming featherweight contender believes he can beat Aldo.
The only way to find out is to do exactly what the UFC® has decided to do: pin the two against one another.
Clash of Cultures
The fight will also represent a clash of cultures between the consistent Brazilian champion, Aldo, and the forthright, Irish McGregor.
“Scarface” is a veteran fighter and has quite the following, particularly of loyal Brazilian fans. His fans are fiercely loyal to him. However, in McGregor’s short time in the UFC®, he has become the soul leader of the Irish MMA fan base.
McGregor lit a fire into the world of Irish MMA, which has had few standouts unlike the UFC® star-studded Brazil.
McGregor has claimed there is nothing “special” about Aldo’s boxing, despite his success.
Debatable, but we will let it slide. Like most fans, although entertained by McGregor, we are genuinely more interested in how he will perform once placed in the Octagon™ against Aldo for the first time.
UFC® International Fight Week
The Fourth Annual UFC® International Fight Week is a week-long celebration where fans, fighters and UFC® icons come together in Las Vegas. The event will take place July 7-12. The festival is the largest gathering of fighters in the world.
