UFC 191 Recap

Johnson-Dodson-2.pngLabor Day weekend has come and gone, and you know what that means, right?  No, not hiding all the white in your wardrobe…UFC 191 went down this weekend!  The much-anticipated headlining fight for the flyweight title didn’t disappoint, and there were a few unexpected surprises from unlikely places.  If you missed the fight, don’t worry!  We’ve got you covered with highlights from the main card as well as a look ahead at UFC 192!  Here are a few key takeaways from UFC 191:

The Mighty Mouse Hasn’t Fallen

There was quite a bit of hype leading up to the main event – in large part due to the mudslinging between Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and John “The Magician” Dodson.  This headlining battle for the flyweight title was a rematch of a bout between the two fighters back in 2013 – one in which Johnson was ultimately victorious, but Dodson’s scrappy style came close to winning him the belt.

Everyone was under the impression that this would be a close fight that would come down to the wire, but Johnson left no doubt from the get-go that he wouldn’t be relinquishing his title.  Dodson didn’t hand him the match by any means – he avoided a number of takedowns – but Johnson made it obvious that he was in the driver’s seat throughout the match.  Mighty Mouse reportedly said after the fight that the one thing he wishes he had done differently is to have ended the match sooner.

This is Johnson’s ninth consecutive win and his record now stands at 23-2.  He’s defended his flyweight title no less than seven times to date.  He may be the best MMA fighter in the ring today, all things considered.  Dodson is already vying for a third chance at the title, but there’s rumors of Johnson moving up to bantamweight.  Will The Magician ever get the chance to challenge Mighty Mouse again?  Only time (and Dana White) will tell.

What Else Happened?

Number four-ranked Andrei “Pit Bull” Arlovski managed to pull out a win over Frank Mir in this heavyweight bout, but not without unhappy rumblings from the UFC fan base.  Many feel that the judges got this decision wrong and that Mir was robbed of his rightful victory because of his control over and takedown of Arlovski.  The judges’ decision was unanimous, however, leaving little room for argument on the outcome of this match that many had been waiting over ten years to see.

JOHNSON_ANTHONYMeanwhile, in the light heavyweight class, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson finally tops the headlines for UFC-related reasons!  Johnson is now back in the race for the light heavyweight title after a second-round knockout of his opponent, Jimi “Poster Boy” Manuwa.  Johnson literally came out swinging and took down Manuwa early, but Manuwa ended up in control towards the end of Round 1.  The KO was delivered in Round 2, with Johnson stating, “We don’t really train that.  I guess it’s in my DNA.”  Let’s be honest though, we don’t really care about Johnson’s genetics, just that he delivered UFC’s performance of the night on Saturday.

Looking Ahead to UFC 192

UFC-192-Event-Ad-UFC-VIP-ExperienceUFC 192 on October 3rd marks the first fight of UFC’s new seasonal campaign, “GOBIG,” to be held here in the United States!  Is there a possibility that we could see a Daniel “DC” Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson rematch in the not-too-distant future?  That primarily depends on whether Cormier can hang onto his light heavyweight title in his match-up against number two contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson from Sweden.  UFC 192 will also feature Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley competing against Johny “Bigg Rigg” Hendricks in a welterweight match-up as the co-main event.

This is the very definition of a can’t-miss night!  Leave the binoculars at home – with UFC VIP Experience packages, you could be taking in the action just outside the ropes of the Octagon®.  Celebrity Fighter and Octagon Girl appearances are a given, as are reserved seats to the Fighter Q&A and the Weigh-In on Friday.  Looking for tips on what to do in Houston during the rest of your trip?  Let our Travel Guide to Houston blog post help you plan your itinerary!
