Back at it again. UFC 199 will headline a rematch between Luke Rockhold and Chris Weidman for the UFC Middleweight title. Their previous bout at UFC 194 was easily the fight of the night after Weidman lost his undefeated record and his belt to Rockhold, who knocked him out in the 4th round after completely pounding and bloodying him.
Initially, it appeared Rockhold would defend his title against Yoel Romero – that was until Romero failed his drug test. That left Vitor Belfort and Jacare Souza as potential options, but they were already fighting each other on an FS1 card in Brazil on May 14. So why not an immediate rematch with Weidman, right? Dana White thought it was a great idea, so let’s roll with it.
UFC® 194 Recap
Their last fight was pretty brutal. We had high hopes for Weidman, but Rockhold completely crushed them. Neither fighter was really at 100% as Rockhold was recovering from a staph infection and Weidman was apparently dealing with a fractured foot. However, they still gave us one of the most exciting fights we’ve ever seen. Talk about a lot of blood.
The two were fighting pretty evenly in the first two rounds before a lazy kick from Weidman caused things to heat up. Rockhold took advantage and thus began the beat down. Many fans thought the fight should have ended in the 3rd round – we are still wondering how Weidman even held on into the 4th round.
Rockhold demonstrated that he really is the complete package. He’s extremely strong with quickly-launched strikes and damaging kicks. He’s tough to take down, takes advantage of his length and demonstrates his wide range. We saw this in his first fight with Weidman, and we will likely see it again.
UFC® 199 Predictions
When you compare Weidman and Rockhold, it’s evident that Rockhold has the overall advantage. However, this does not undermine Weidman and his potential to win back the belt. What we have seen time and time again is that Weidman has the heart of a champion. While he doesn’t mix well with Rockhold’s skill set, we should not sell him short. After all, just look at his record.
When it comes to making predictions, though, it’s hard not to go with the champion. I get that. Rockhold hits harder and faster and has the better footwork. Weidman is a great fighter, but he really has met his match with Rockhold. We expect Weidman to battle hard to get back to the top, but we know Rockhold won’t let him off easy. Rockhold predicts a second-round finish – we’ll see about that.
Our Prediction: We like bold predictions. We think Weidman will get his belt back via decision.
